Under the Sea: A Field Trip

Yesterday, I took the whole preschool on a field trip to the Denver Aquarium. All month we have been learning about seahorses, starfish, sharks, stingrays, fish, octopus, and other fun creatures that live beneath the sea. The field trip was a way to enhance their learning by taking them out of our Longmont location, and into a novel learning environment.

It was such a thrill to watch their eyes light up as they went from exhibit to exhibit. I felt a surge of pride as they correctly identified sea urchins, sea horses, sharks, and stingrays.

I had two brave parent chaperones, without which the trip would not have been possible. Wrangling six kids through a maze of groups and exhibits is not for the faint of heart!

Aside from the Tiger exhibit (which I found to be completely unnecessary and crowded), the aquarium was a great place to expose the children to the wonders of the deep. We were able to pet stingrays, watch sharks and turtles swim and see seahorses in real life!

The kids loved the novelty of traveling together as a group and seeing something new that allowed them to cement what we've been learning all month in a real world way. I can't wait to take another field trip soon!
